When Motorhome meets Trusted Housesitters

Wagging Tails, Open Roads: How House Sitting Lets Us Travel Freely (Without Missing Out on Dogs)

Living in a motorhome comes with a lot of perks – freedom, flexibility and the ability to wake up somewhere new as we choose. But there’s one thing that life on the road doesn’t always provide: regular time with dogs.

We love dogs. The walks, the routines, the companionship – there’s something grounding about having a four-legged presence around. But owning a dog full-time doesn’t quite fit with the unpredictability of motorhome life.

That’s where Trusted Housesitters comes in – and it’s been a bit of a game changer for us.

What started as a practical way to save money while travelling has become one of the most rewarding parts of our lifestyle.

Each house sit gives us the chance to step into a different home, in a completely new location, with one very important bonus: dogs. Lots of them! All shapes, sizes, and personalities.

One week we might be exploring coastal paths with an energetic cockapoo who treats every walk like a marathon. The next, we’re keeping company with a laid-back older dog who prefers slow strolls and long naps. Every sit is different, and that’s part of the fun – you quickly learn their routines, their quirks and what makes them tick.

It’s like getting all the best parts of having a dog, without needing to commit long-term.

From a practical point of view, house sitting fits perfectly with motorhome travel:

It significantly reduces costs

Accommodation is one of the biggest travel expenses. By house sitting, we stay in comfortable homes for free in exchange for looking after pets. It allows us to travel further and for longer without stretching the budget.

It adds structure to a flexible lifestyle

Motorhome life can be wonderfully spontaneous but sometimes it’s nice to have a bit of routine. Walking a dog, sticking to feeding times and settling into a home – even temporarily – adds a sense of rhythm.

It helps you experience places more like a local

You’re not just passing through – you’re living there, even if only briefly. Dog walks lead you to local parks, hidden paths, and neighbourhood spots you’d never find otherwise.

It offers the perfect “dog fix”

This is the key point for us… So if you really love dogs but don’t want the responsibility of owning one while travelling, this is the sweet spot. You get companionship, connection and plenty of tail wags – then, when the sit ends, you’re free to hit the road again. For us, getting pupdates from the owners after we’ve left, is a real bonus.

There’s also something special about the trust involved. Homeowners are inviting you into their space and trusting you with their pets, and in return, you get to experience a different way of living – one that’s more rooted, even if just for a short while.

Over time, these sits become more than just practical stops, they turn into meaningful experiences. Different homes, different dogs, different routines… but a consistent sense of connection wherever you go.

For us, house sitting has become the perfect balance. We still have the freedom of motorhome life – the ability to explore, move, and change plans – but now it’s interwoven with moments of calm, companionship, and plenty of dog walks.

And honestly? That combination is hard to beat.

Top tip – This works, as long as there is a big enough driveway for our motorhome, or space on their road to park up for the time we are in the house!
